 Halle Berry, born on August 14, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, is an acclaimed American actress and the first African American woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. She earned this historic honor for her powerful portrayal of Leticia Musgrove in Monster’s Ball (2001).

Berry began her career as a beauty pageant contestant and model before transitioning to acting in 1989. She gained early recognition with roles in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever (1991) and the romantic comedy Boomerang (1992) alongside Eddie Murphy. In 1995, she co-starred with Jessica Lange in the drama Losing Isaiah. Her portrayal of Dorothy Dandridge, the first African American actress nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, in the TV film Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999) won Berry both an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

She took on several high-profile action roles, including in X-Men (2000) and its sequels, Swordfish (2001), and Die Another Day (2002), where she played a Bond girl. Berry continued to lead with top billing in the thriller Gothika (2003) and the superhero film Catwoman (2004).

In 2005, she starred in the TV adaptation of Zora Neale Hurston’s novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Berry followed this with lead roles in the drama Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) and Frankie & Alice (2010), where she played a woman battling dissociative identity disorder. Her versatility continued to shine in the ensemble romantic comedy New Year’s Eve (2011) and the thriller Dark Tide (2012), where she portrayed a diving instructor.

In 2012’s Cloud Atlas, Berry took on multiple diverse roles in a film spanning centuries, from a 1970s journalist to a futuristic male Asian doctor. She went on to star in thrillers such as The Call (2013), Kidnap (2017), and the spy movie Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017). That same year, she played a foster parent during the 1992 Los Angeles riots in Kings.

Berry later joined the cast of John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum (2019) and made her directorial debut with Bruised (2020), in which she also starred as a former MMA fighter seeking personal and professional redemption. In 2022, she appeared in the sci-fi thriller Moonfall, playing an astronaut tasked with saving Earth from a catastrophic lunar collision.
